Sometimes it can be a little overwhelming when you think about decorating an entire home and making sure that everything flows together. Design is categorized into groups- are you modern, traditional, transitional, rustic farmhouse, shabby chic etc. but in my opinion the worst thing you can do when you are trying to figure out what design atheistic you are drawn to, is to put yourself in a box for one specific type of design. We are multidimensional beings and a lot of times we are drawn to different parts of design. I have always felt that the best spaces are those that are a curated collection of pieces that are unique to you and the lifestyle that you lead. The minute you stop trying to define yourself as being one specific design type is when you can really start to have fun in your home.
So how do you figure out what you are drawn to? I have always felt like Pinterest is a great place to really see the things you tend to gravitate towards. Create a home board and start pinning everything that you like and would love to see in your own home. Try not to over think it just pin things that you love. After you are done take a look at your board, look for patterns in furniture, paint, accessories and colours- this will be your jumping off point. When you are consistently seeing something in your pins you can be fairly certain that you will like it in your home.
One of my favourite things to do when I am decorating a space is to create a board where I can look at all the pieces I am liking, and really get a feel for how they will look together. Sometimes I will even just make a collage on my phone to see if some colours are working. My other piece of advice is to search for items for your home that you love-don’t settle for a “fill in until I can get what I really want” item because you won’t be happy long term and you will end up spending more money to get what you originally wanted anyway (or at least I always seem to haha). Even though it takes a bit longer for the space to be finished, you will be much happier with the end result. After all, designing your home isn’t a race, your going to be living there for awhile so just relax and enjoy coming up with the style route you want to go in and don’t be afraid of slow design.
Have a great day friends!
